It is Wednesday, 9.10.08 and it is cool.
Weather in Winnipeg is strange. It’s cold, feeling about 10ish celsius in the shade, and 20ish in the sun. I’m not complaining, I just want to wear one type of clothing instead of having to keep changing. Got up, similar routine, at school by 9am, had breakfast and read some Letourneau (a new book on the history of nationalism in Quebec that takes a historical and almost deconstructionist perspective). Had Japanese class and we spent a long time on the ‘te’ and ‘potential’ verbs. Holy shit Japanese is so much harder than I thought it was. Also, I wish I would have studied before going over. There are a lot of things that now make sense. Continue reading ‘Indubitability and Perspective’
It is 9.9.08 and it is cool.
Got up around 9am, I shouldn’t have slept so long. I took the dogs out and checked email and did the normal morning things I do. I’m still not setting a routine, and it’s really bothering me. It will start tomorrow I reckon. 7am wake, walk dogs, make breakfast, shower and be ready for the day. I think in Japan I was just so used to catching up with the news of the day back home. Given the time difference, most emails and facebook things would happen while I was sleeping. Here, it’s more in the evening that content comes out. Continue reading ‘Taylor, Holism’
It is Monday, 9.8.08 and it is cool and breezy.
Woke up with Jeannine, she left for work and I got ready for class. By 9am I was on the way to school. Had breakfast and worked on some Japanese before heading to class. Today we worked on verb conjugation which is extremely difficult for me. The conversational things I can handle, but the verb and adjective differences are really something I haven’t even looked at before. After class I spent some time with Forsey talking about my thesis and by noon it was too late to speak with Savickey. Continue reading ‘Back(ish) in the Swing’
It is Sunday 9.7.08 and it is cool.
Over the weekend Jeannine and I were able to hang out a lot. On Saturday we shopped for a good part of the day and did some errands. Had lunch at the restaurant Jeannine’s sister works at, and I had to bail on my friend Kenley for the weekend to go to Gimli to help Jeannine. Jeannine had a ‘Prime Rib’ Dinner in Winnipeg Beach for work to get to (an hour out of Winnipeg) and while there I visited my Nana and Step-mother, having dinner at a nice local restaurant. Continue reading ‘In-Laws’
It is Friday 9.5.08 and it is cool. I love 15c. It’s the perfect temperature.
Woke up with Jeannine and she left for work. I had a shower and some breakfast and headed to school. Picked up my ‘GENKI II’ text and workbook for Int. Japanese. Attended my class and really felt comfortable. My pronunciation and reading is great, my vocabulary is just really really lacking. I have to fix that somehow. Since that was my only class for the day I went up to the faculty and hung out with Dr. Borman, who is the new professor on staff this year. He’s from Windsor Ontario and has studied at York in Toronto and Fordham in New York. His focus is Marx and Continental Philosophy and his job is to fill those Continental holes in our department.
We talked for about 2 hours about my topic. It was extraordinarily awkward at first, as I was really at a loss for ideas, but in talking to him we worked out a few options in terms of a relation to Marx and a discussion of the split between Analytic and Continental. I’m really glad I took the time, and it was extremely helpful to me to hammer out the problems I have with representationalism.
It is 9.4.08 and it’s cool.
Woke up late around noon to an empty house. It took me a long time to get to sleep. I don’t know if this is jetlag still or just plain old insomnia. I had plans for starting work on the foyer, but that took a backseat to dishes and reading T.H. Green all day. Kenley called and we talked about a potential ‘welcome home’ party at Dave’s place. I want a dance-party! Over the course of the day I ate the latter half of an old bag of chips found in the pantry and the last row of chips ahoy. So much for my lost weight… I had better get back to the gym.
Jeannine came from Gimli today and we had a good old fashioned SUBWAY sandwich dinner (I had the Veggie Max, delicious!) and then caught ‘Hamlet 2′ with Steve Coogan. It was quite good, but rather long. The first half was slow and touch and go, but the pay off was the actual production of Hamlet 2 which could be a Tony award-winner on its own.
Home, Jeannine is checking flyers and I’m still at a loss for my thesis topic. After Japanese tomorrow I’ll be talking to a few profs and hopefully that will give me some further insight.
It is Wednesday, 9.3.08 and it’s cool.
Up early with Jeannine, she took the dogs to Gimli on her way to work. Her mom’s smallest has a “date with the knife” and Marvin is having trouble with his leg, so he’s going in for a checkup. The other dogs went too to stay for a few nights at Jeannine’s parent’s place since I’d be at school. On the bus by 7:30, I made wandered around school for a while, and headed to my Intro: Japanese by 8:30. The prof is American, and a new graduate of the PhD program at UBC for Japanese. He was on the JET program for 3 years in Kyoto, and lived in Hokkaido for a year on highschool exchange. Continue reading ‘I Guess I’m Writing a Thesis’
